The Power of User-Led Innovations
User-led innovations (ULIs) are solutions born out of necessity, often out of frustration with existing products. Examples include Pampers, the Maclaren buggy, and even Linux software. These innovations have two key characteristics: a high incentive to innovate and a willingness to experiment. While user innovation has always existed, public and private organizations are now beginning to tap into it for improved variety of ideas and stronger diffusion of innovation. However, there are challenges, such as capturing and sharing ideas across communities and building lasting communities for ongoing innovation. Fortunately, online platforms are now available to help harness the insights of frustrated users.
