The author defines the different parts of the problem, including unanticipated and undesirable effects. The article also discusses the different effects that lead to unanticipated consequences such as lack of foreknowledge, habit, myopia, basic values, and self-defeating predictions. A case study is presented to illustrate the consequences of unanticipated effects, and the article provides suggestions on how to limit unanticipated and undesirable outcomes through open innovation, employee engagement, and embracing change.
