Drop Box or Water Cooler
Idea management systems have historically been modeled after drop boxes, where individuals submit ideas but never hear about them again. However, the rise of social media and crowdsourcing has shifted the focus to community engagement and active discussion about ideas, much like a water cooler environment. To create a successful water cooler model for innovation, firms must establish expectations for interaction, influence company culture, offer rewards and recognition, and communicate frequently and effectively. It is important to note that even software applications designed for community engagement may not be enough to create a successful water cooler model - a cultural shift and executive commitment are key factors.
