Two models of open innovation

Two models of open innovation

Open innovation can be done in two distinct ways: Discover and Jam. Discover starts with a "what" question and is about creating competitive marketplaces where companies can find new technologies to licence or create new partnerships. Jam, on the other hand, starts with a "who" question and is about creating collaborative communities to refine an area of opportunity with partners. In both cases, it is important to have a clear brief and a clear business outcome to succeed. Discover involves an open competition, while Jam involves brainstorming and workshop techniques to create lateral leaps. In the end, both methods can result in collaborative business models, such as joint ventures or delivery partnerships.
