Self-driving cars - Should we fear or welcome them?
Self-driving cars are the innovation that the automotive industry is betting on. The autonomous vehicles promise zero crashes, zero congestion, and zero emissions. The technology is still far from perfect, but some players in the industry have made significant advances. Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has built several autonomous cars and has several million road-miles under their wheels. Tesla, on the other hand, is betting on full self-driving hardware, combining radar, cameras and ultrasonics. The biggest challenges that autonomous cars face are making Lidar, a laser which measures the distance between objects, and adapting to harsh weather conditions. The job market will also suffer a loss of jobs, with drivers being one of the most affected. Self-driving cars will be more expensive in the first few years, and legal responsibility in crashes is still a considerable problem. However, if all goes as planned, the automotive industry revolution could happen in the next 5 to 10 years.
