Parkinson’s Law and the Peter Principle - are they relevant to innovation?
Parkinson's Law, which claims that work expands to fill the time available, is still relevant to innovation as it creates resistance to redesigning work. Incompetent managers are prevalent according to the Peter Principle, which states that people are promoted to their level of incompetence. While meritocracy has its merits, it is imperfect, and criteria for advancement should give weight to creativity, collaboration, and capacity for learning and change.
