Lean Innovation at Amazon
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has always had a customer-centric approach and applied lean principles, such as waste reduction, to streamline operations. Through the use of autonomation (combining human and machine work) and standard work practices, Amazon was able to optimize productivity and stowing times. Lean management principles were also applied to customer service with the implementation of the andon cord: empowering customer service agents to stop production and address quality problems in real-time. However, applying lean principles to software creation remains a challenge for Amazon. The article concludes by exploring the potential for lean principles to extend to 3D printing and the concept of print on demand.
