Innovation is not a gift but a skill that can be developed through competencies. Competency models help formalize ideal patterns needed for excellent performance. There are two competency levels: The Innovator and The Innovation Leader. The Innovator competencies include generating innovative solutions and seeing the big picture. The Innovation Leader competencies include instilling innovation and supporting high levels of teamwork. Innovation leaders must establish a trust culture and maintain relationships based on trust to encourage the diffusion of innovation throughout the organization.
