Respect for People: Lean’s Neglected Pillar
In Lean thinking, Respect for People is one of the two key pillars, but it often receives less attention than Continuous Improvement. This article argues that valuing front-line workers is essential, as they are the ones with the expertise and perspective needed for continuous improvement. Lean leaders should focus on team effectiveness rather than individual skill and hire people who embody Respect for People. Teams should be organized for autonomous collaboration, with a higher level of accountability, and leaders should optimize for output, not micromanage. Ultimately, a company that fosters a healthy work environment through Respect for People will achieve better results.
