Opening up the Stage-Gates to let the new innovating world in?
The Stage-Gate process, first created in the 1980s, has had a significant impact on new product development. However, criticisms of its linear and rigid structure have become more prevalent in today's fast-paced and competitive global innovation landscape. Innovation expert Bob Cooper is reinventing the Stage-Gate process to make it more agile, adaptive, and risk-based. The new process will include four attributes: spiral development cycles, context-based stage and gate definitions and activities, risk-based contingency models, and flexible criteria for decision-making. Additionally, there will be a focus on accelerating the process through value stream analysis, overlapping stages, concurrent activities, and dedicated teams. The end result should be a leaner, faster, and more adaptive innovation process.
