Failure Forums: Learning from Best Buy Media Label 'Redline Entertainment'
Best Buy's attempt at creating its own entertainment label, Redline Entertainment, ended in failure due to a variety of factors, including resistance from other retailers. However, the project led to the creation of the Redline Whitepaper, which documented the errors made during the project and emphasized the importance of sharing innovation results, good or bad. The Whitepaper served as a model for future innovation work at Best Buy and still holds relevance today. Innovation projects inside larger corporations can be difficult, but taking risks and failing is necessary to drive innovation. Jennifer JJ Schaidler, the leader of the Redline project, went on to lead other successful initiatives at Best Buy and currently serves as the General Manager for Brightstar, the world's largest specialized wireless distributor and mobile service company.
