Young businesses are finding new ways to finance their growth beyond traditional venture capital. One option is corporate venturing, which sees larger companies invest in smaller firms with the intention of commercializing their innovations. Open innovation, where SMEs partner with larger firms to leverage their distribution channels and gain access to consumers, represents another opportunity. And, crowdfunding has become a popular avenue for start-ups to solicit funds from the general public. These alternative funding avenues offer greater flexibility and reduced restrictions in exchange for less of the support and advice typically provided by venture capitalists.
