Understanding the Innovative Mindset: Can it be learned?
Are creativity and innovation innate or can they be learned? Hal Gregersen, co-author of The Innovator’s DNA, argues that these skills can be acquired through learning five key skills including association, questioning, observing, networking and experimenting. Gregersen points out that two-thirds of the skills required to innovate can be learned, with only 25-40% stemming from genetics. There’s no need to master all five skills as everyone has their own signature strengths. There are a few helpful habits that can help one tap into their creative and innovative side. These include doing creative work when you're tired, exercising to improve divergent thinking, exposing yourself to an ambient level of noise, connecting existing ideas, and travelling to different places.
