Sweet Innovation - The Chipwich Story
Richard LaMotta, inventor of the Chipwich ice cream sandwich, used guerilla marketing to take it from a retail store to selling 200,000 per day nationwide. His innovative approach established handheld ice cream as a new product category with a premium price point, filling a gap in the market for high-quality ice cream. LaMotta’s marketing tactics earned him millions of dollars in free advertising and turned the Chipwich into a viral sensation. LaMotta overcame bankruptcy and knockoff competitors, but control of his innovation was ultimately lost when it was sold to Coolbrands International and later to Nestle. Despite the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, LaMotta persevered and his legacy continues to live on through the memorable, delicious Chipwich.
