Social Innovation
The Fortune 100 are adopting the use of wikis, blogs, mashups, and social networks to improve productivity, knowledge transfer, and profitability. But can the Web 2.0 environment facilitate innovation within organizations? The author experimented with online innovation using Systematic Inventive Thinking process, through an online learning platform known as O.P.I.E, but failed due to the modification needed in both the platform and process. The platform used lacked the necessary tools to facilitate the exchange and touchpoints needed for innovation. Members could not easily connect with one another because they were not informed about the new product posts. The process and people also needed to be modified to optimize innovation. More work needs to be done in how the process is facilitated online and how expectations are set for the participants to make social innovation promising.
