Reducing our dependency on others' innovation best practices is essential
Best practice can be a hidden drug within organizations as managers constantly feel under pressure to demonstrate why they are falling behind or keeping ahead of competitors. Focusing solely on best practices can lead to complacency and losing sight of why the organization was successful in the first place. Instead, it's important to move beyond reliance on best practices and explore emerging practices. The Cynefin framework helps to determine which domain an innovation falls into and which practices and actions are appropriate. For incremental innovation, best practice is suitable; for distinctive innovation, experts can offer plausible outcomes based on known experiences; for radical innovation, experimentation and gamification should be used; and for disruptive innovation, a novel approach is needed to stabilize and understand the situation.
