Levers for Healthcare Innovation
The historical fee-for-service model in the healthcare industry in the United States is unsustainable, and stakeholders are overwhelmed with the required change for a new approach. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement identifies levers for healthcare innovation in three categories: improving patient experience, health outcomes, and lowering costs. Understanding each lever is the first step in identifying innovative approaches for effective change. Innovations for improving patient experience involve asking for feedback, comprehensive knowledge sharing, and tailoring care for different populations. Improving health outcomes enables innovation in organization differentiation, integrated care team composition, and value-enhanced cost reductions, among others. Lowering costs requires innovation in medical device and pharmaceutical management, technology for care delivery, workforce training and skills, and governmental regulations, among others.
