Don't rock the boat innovation
Many CEOs want to drive differentiation and new profits, but many executives don't understand what it takes to create valuable new ideas. This often leaves the definition of innovation to middle managers who are experts at creating small improvements to existing products and services but ultimately, this approach leads to "don't rock the boat" innovation. While it adheres to best practices, it results in nice but not very differentiated or new products. Companies need to rock the boat and take risks to create real difference, and innovation teams need a directive, the right people and resources, and tolerance for risk to make it happen.
