Innovation Sighting: Task Unification and CAPTCHA
Captcha, the test requiring website visitors to enter text correctly before gaining access, is used by Professor Luis von Ahn to digitize every book in the world. Through a program called reCaptcha, the words humans decipher from captcha are difficult-to-read words from old printed texts. Major websites like Facebook and Yahoo! use reCaptcha for additional protection, and users unknowingly transform printed content into digital form by typing the words into the captcha box. The network of captcha responses helps von Ahn's latest venture, Duolingo, which translates the web into global languages. Von Ahn harnessed the hundreds of millions of daily captcha test responses to achieve a greater purpose.
