Fluid Intelligence - Are you getting enough sleep to innovate?
Research suggests that sleep is critical for innovation. A recent study published in the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience found that fluid intelligence, which is key to innovative thinking, correlates with fast parietal spindles that occur during non-REM sleep. The more sleep we get, the more of these events occur and the better our ability to recognize patterns and make useful connections. Another classic study in Behavioral Economics found that decision fatigue affects our ability to make good decisions as the day progresses, which can lead to easy, obvious answers rather than creative solutions. Innovators who are well-rested are more likely to consider big, surprising ideas.
